Everyone goes through difficult times which help shape us as individuals and leave permanent impressions on the soul. When you face a life changing event, for example almost dying, your outlook shifts. Surviving that kind of trauma can destroy you or create a new fire inside you; which path you follow depends only on YOU!
Personally, for me I saw something I suspected I had inside all this time and only after going thru a hell of a recovery did I understand what desire I possessed in myself. It made me see, thru suffering, you can put your life into perspective. I'm fortunate that I have my mental capabilities, both my legs and arms and that I have a spare eye. I see how lucky I was and how things could have turned out drastically different. This experience fills me with gratitude and inspires me to push hard each day.
Many people have faced greater disadvantages than myself and have succeed. This fact humbles me, drives me forward each and every day. Instead of making excuses, blaming or falling into despair, I took control back and allowed my injury to fuel positive change in my life.
My life changed when I was injured in Iraq. The optimist in me realized this experience reframed my body and mind's threshold for pain and stress. It has forever given me perspective. When I feel unmotivated, sad, annoyed or frustrated by life I simply recall what I've been through:
- I could be getting blown up again in Mosul
- I could be in the ER feeling my blood run out of my neck before being put into an induced coma
- I could be at Walter Reed Hospital again for months and months enduring eye surgery after eye surgery
- I could be laying in the face-down position for weeks while I wait for my detached retina to scar into place post surgery.

After reflecting just a little bit, the entire world becomes muted. It has become the best defense for anxiety, stress and complacency. Getting cut off on the drive to work, no worries. Getting the wrong delivery order, oh well. Getting spoken over during an important business call, all good.
I recalibrate myself. It forces me to be and grow stronger. I become mentally stronger by pushing through and past what I know is possible. To reconsider the situation and quite honestly put the trivial into perspective.
